In Twilight they are concidered the perfect preditor. They sparkle in the daylight, not to be pretty but as an act of hunting. Think of it like a deer in the headlights effect. That is the author's theory at least. I can't say I like this new view of this ancient race, but it does make for an interesting twist to the tale.
