X-Men Volume 3 & 4
>
There’s something we gotta watch right now, bub!” Yup, that’s what I said to my kids as soon as I held up the cases for X-Men Volume 3 & 4 of the animated series. See I remember being 13 and this series was coming out on Saturday mornings week after week, you know when Saturday morning cartoons were around and they didn’t suck! I really loved this series then and now because it stayed really true to the events in the X-Men’s past without straying too far from actual comic time lines. Having these episodes on DVD now let’s me share these stories with my kids. Don’t worry though…just because Wolverine has foot long adamantium claws that come shooting through his hands, he never gets too violent and never impales anyone with them….as far as I could remember. Now, in these two volumes a ton of ground is covered in this series and in the comic timeline as well.
In Volume 3, Dark Phoenix kicks things off when it inhabits the body of Jean Grey again, spinning her out of control. Appearances by Nightcrawler, Magneto, Juggernaut, Weapon X stuff, and the return of Morph to the series after his Season 1 issues. Notable episodes are: Of course the “Dark Phoenix Saga”. Even out of the out-of-the-ordinary ones like: “Longshot”, where a dude with a mullet comes from another world, with amnesia. Along with Mojo, a crazy obese inter-dimensional TV executive that puts the X-Men into his own deranged reality show where he broadcasts to raise the viewership of his captive audience! Also, I got a kick out of “Weapon X, Lies, & Videotape”! In this one a seemingly harmless postcard unleashes a whole crap-ton of memories in Wolverine that push him to the edge of insanity. To keep his mind from being torn apart, Wolverine and Beast travel to the abandoned top-secret Weapon X lab where Wolverine got his ‘ol bones coated with Adamantium. There they encounter other former “guys who were poked and prodded a little too much” such as Sabretooth, Maverick and Silver Fox—who are suffering similar mental problems.
Volume 4 ramps up even more with the X-Men joining forces with heroes from the future to fight that big lipped old freak Apocalypse. Some crowning moments in this volume were: “Beyond Good and Evil” Parts 1-4. In 3999 Apocalypse tricks Cable (Scott and Jean’s son from another time-line) and steals Cable’s time travel thingy and goes back in time, but he accidentally messes up the whole time-stream. As Apocalypse’s final curtain call comes about, several in his band team up with the X-Men to stop him. At the end, well….I couldn’t spoil that now could I?
