MALICE Book Giveaway (Closed)
ABOUT THE BOOK
“TALL JAKE, TAKE ME AWAY…”
Everyone’s heard the rumors. Call on Tall Jake and he’ll take you to Malice, a world that exists inside a terrifying comic book. A place most kids never leave.Seth and Kady think it’s all a silly myth. But then their friend disappears, and suddenly the rumors don’t seem so silly anymore…
Part thriller, part ground-breaking graphic novel … get into this story, and you may never get out!
I received a copy of the book and upon opening it i was stunned to see that the book had some sort of raised, almost 3-d effect to it. I have since delved into it and I am pleasantly surprised in what I have found not only in the writing of the book, but also the “comic book look” that the novel incorporates into the story.
Giveaway
Five (5) winners will receive a copy of Malice.
Books are valued at $14.99 each.

Lands’ End Wool Cotton Button Mock Sweater Review and Giveaway (Closed)
Once again my friends over at Lands’ End have entrusted me in telling you all about their Wool Cotton Button Mock Sweater. You see I love the cold weather. My wife hates the cold weather. She loves to hate me for loving the cold weather. I love my wife and now when I take off my jacket to give to her she won’t hate herself because I will have on a sweater that I love.
Here is a little about the jacket from the website:
When you put this sweater on don’t forget to thank Mother Nature. It’s created when fine Merino wool is blended with equal parts of cotton and nylon. The result is a hefty sweater that’s extra-warm, soft on your skin, stands up better to wear and tear. Has features you’ll like too. Behind the five-button placket is a half zip head opening for easy on/off, the mock-style neck gives you added coverage. Has rib-knit cuffs and bottom. 50% Merino wool/25% cotton/25% nylon. Dry clean. Imported.
Ryan’s Rating
To boil everything down to give you my honest opinions…there are some good and some bad things about the sweater. One thing that I had an issue with was the collar. I didn’t know how to wear it! I didn’t know if I should lay it down smooth or get “all crunk” by “poppin da colla”. But, I think if I knew the style that it was to be worn in, it would be really good. Speaking of the collar…there are several different ways to make sure your neck area is warm. You can either zip or button the collar in whatever style you desire.
Even though this sweater is 50% wool, it didn’t make me itchy or uncomfortable at all. It really is a comfortable fit and doesn’t bunch up or make me look frumpy like some sweaters can do. Also, it breathes really well while not letting me get cold or allow the elements get to me.
Overall Rating – 8 out of 10

Night At The Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
I’m going to come right out and say that I did not see the first installment of this series. Not that I didn’t want to, but I believe our youngest was taking up all of our TV and film time when the first one came out. So when I was asked to review Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian I was happy to, in a way, see what I was missing. Thanks to Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment I was able to check out the Blu-ray Disc/DVD Combo Pack (Blu-ray, DVD and a Digital Copy) of the movie. I am a person that really enjoys the type of comedy that Ben Stiller brings to the screen. His sarcastic realism cracks me up every time I watch him interact with different characters, and believe me when I say there are tons of characters in this movie.
The boys and I watched this the other night while the ladies were out. From the beginning they were interested in this movie that had not only people dressed in crazy costumes, characters that could fit in the palm of their hands, and animals of all types running all throughout this huge warehouse. The movie does have a good storyline from what I can tell even though I didn’t see the first one. It would be hard to catch up with the overarching story if you are just tuning in on this movie. The cast of characters and the effects they used to create and differentiate all of them were very neat and had me asking “how’d they do that?”
About
History is larger than life — and twice as funny — in this monumental comedy sequel. Ben Stiller (Meet The Parents, There’s Something About Mary) stars as Larry Daley, a former night watchman at the Museum of Natural History, where the exhibits come alive after dark. But now Larry’s nocturnal friends are being retired to the archives of the Smithsonian Institution, luring him back for a hilarious, all-out battle against a cranky Egyptian Pharaoh who plans to take over the museum… and the world! From returning director Shawn Levy (Cheaper By The Dozen), the film also stars Amy Adams (Enchanted), Robin Williams (Good Will Hunting), Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers), Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”), Ricky Gervais (“The Office”), Steve Coogan (Tropic Thunder) and Jonah Hill (Super Bad).
My Mini-Synopsis of the Movie
Ben Stiller plays an ex-security guard named Larry now turned product inventor that gets called back to his old museum of employment because some of the exhibits are going to be sent to the Smithsonian and be packed away. Supposedly when the sun goes down and the exhibits are in the vicinity of this tablet thingy, they all come to life. So now Larry must go and try to rescue them. Larry finds the evil brother to another egyptian dude from his museum that wants to rule the world now. Stiller joins forces with Amelia Earhart who he finds hot. They embark on trying to stop the pharoah dude, Al Capone, and other famous baddies while the entire Smithsonian wakes up. Owen Wilson is his usual self.

Birkenstock Boston Review and Giveaway (Closed)
For years and years I have heard of people using the name “Birkenstock“. When I was younger I thought that it was a follow-up concert to Woodstock. Little did I know, years later, I would be have the chance to really find out what Birkenstocks are and figure out why I had never worn them before. I was contacted by Birkenstock to have the opportunity to “walk a mile in their shoes this fall”. See, every step a man takes puts 500 pounds of pressure on his feet – that’s why all of their shoes mold over time to the wearer’s foot, offering individualized support.
I was sent the Boston Soft Footbed Clog in Mocha Suede. When I first got the pair of shoes, I admittedly was apprehensive about wearing a pair of clogs. Most guys when they hear the word clogs, shudder and think that only hippies parading around smelling like patchouli and eating turkey legs wear them. Well, I was wrong about everything. Upon putting them on, the shoes felt very roomy and comfortable. They looked good with shorts and even looked great with jeans.
The Birkenstock Soft Footbed features an extra layer of cushioning foam built into our legendary footbed.
A unique foam layer built from millions of microscopic air bubbles is inserted between the top layer suede footbed liner and the layers of cork and jute that make up the rest of the footbed.
This ensures a cushioned yet firm foundation for immediate comfort and full arch support, built on the most solid foundation in footwear.
Ryan’s Rating
I am someone who usually only wears flip-flops or some sort of athletic shoe. For this reason when I wore the shoes during the first day I was not happy. They were totally different than anything I had worn before and my feet were really miserable. I believe this to be because my feet had to get used to the feel and the overall feeling of the shoe. Since then, my feet and the shoes get along great now and it really feels like it is “my” shoe that is customized for me. Another thing that would have normally make me hesitate on getting a pair of shoes like this is the price. The price of most Boston’s is around $130 and I never pay that much for shoes. But, you get what you pay for and I believe that I will be making more purchases from Birkenstock in the future.
Overall Rating – a strong 7.5 out of 10

Up Review
Thanks Pixar for making me boo-hoo within the first 10 minutes of your great little tear-jerk-er Up. I sat down late one night and threw this into the player and began to watch and really soak up all what this movie had to offer. Come to find out this is one of my favorite Pixar movies ever made. Not as good as The Incredibles, but way better than Ratatouille.
Even though the main character is an elderly man who doesn’t look very engaging, he turns out to be very charming while even throwing in all of the usual “old folks” jokes along the way. I will be honest and say the kiddos have not watched it yet. From what I saw though, Up really balances out the movie to where children and adults can enjoy their movie watching experience with things that appeal to all age groups. The disc also has tons of special features that are very extensive and the movie will definitely “blow” you away!
About
Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios take moviegoers up, up and away on one of the funniest adventures of all time with their latest comedy-fantasy. Up follows the uplifting tale of 78-year-old balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen, who finally fulfills his lifelong dream of a great adventure when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America. But he discovers all too late that his biggest nightmare has stowed away on the trip: an overly optimistic 8-year-old Wilderness Explorer named Russell. Their journey to a lost world, where they encounter some strange, exotic and surprising characters, is filled with hilarity, emotion and wildly imaginative adventure.
My Mini-Synopsis of the Movie
So we start with the basic intro of the characters. Boy meets girl, boy be-friends girl, boy marries girl, then boy and girl who are now man and women proceed to make me ball like a little baby. Their life goes on until one day he is alone and people are trying to get him out of his quaint little house while a little boy is trying to get a “help an elderly person” badge . The story moves along with Carl setting sail inside his house with a tagalong no less, then proceeds to arrive at his destination only to find he is not alone in paradise. So after a crazy bird bothering them, a slew of talking dogs, and alot of old man grunts, the movie turns around when…ha…not gonna spoil it for you! Go buy it and enjoy it for yourself.

Monsters Inc. Review
Ever wonder when growing up why monsters insisted on scaring the crap out of you? Wait….you mean you didn’t have any monster bothering you? Well, I figured I would let you in on a little secret….monsters are real! If you don’t believe me then you need to pick up a copy of Monsters, Inc. 4-disc combo pack and see for yourself. I watched this movie for the first time all of the way through just this past week. I don’t know why I had never finished it, but I finally did. This movie is fun for all ages like all of the other Pixar movies. It’s really refreshing to see an entire movie centered around strange characters whose society thrives on the energy that they collect by scaring our world.

My Mini-Synopsis of the Movie
Well, we start out with some of what monsters do best…scaring kids half to death. Seems to me that their whole world depends on the energy that comes from a child’s scream. Sulley is the champion “scarer” and he is accompanied by his one-eyed friend Mike. They have just a normal scare on a child, but the catch on this one is that she follows them back. Humans aren’t allowed in the Monster world and this really poses a problem for the monstrous duo. They try to hide the little girl named “Boo”, get in trouble once the company finds out they are harboring a dangerous little child, rescue the girl on numerous occasions and then….once again not telling you how it ends.
Ryan’s Rating
After all it is a Pixar movie and they have proven time and time again that they put out quality. There are tons of special features and having the Blu-Ray, the DVD, and the digital copy makes life so much easier. This way we can use it at home, in the car, and on the iPhone for use at Doctor’s appointment and other times I have to bribe the kiddos to shush! The only thing wrong with the entire movie is the ending….WHAT THE HECK DID HE SEE OR WHAT WERE WE SUPPOSED TO THINK WHEN HE ENTERED THAT ROOM?!?!? GAGHH! It may be simple to figure out but, It wasn’t for me.

Draw Star Wars: The Clone Wars Book Review and Giveaway (Closed)
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…books like this didn’t exist. However, now kids can tap into the world of art and drawing with this slick little book titled “Draw Star Wars The Clone Wars”. I will go right ahead and admit that I am a Star Wars lover. So when I got the chance to let the kids try this book out for themselves I was ready for them to go to bed so I could have my turn to draw some of our favorite characters. My 6 year old, Taylor, totally loved this book. She is a budding artist in my eyes and she really enjoyed going through the entire book and seeing all of the different things to draw and finding out how to draw them.
About
Draw Star Wars: The Clone Wars is packed with tips and techniques, practice space to draw right in the book, and translucent overlays to make you a master of drawing. Start with stick figures, move onto basic shapes, and finish up with the details. Learn to draw 20 different Clone Wars characters. The book comes with everything you need, including a black marker, double-tipped metallic — colored pencils, and an always-sharp mechanical pencil. Of course, we also include perhaps the most essential tool for any artist… an eraser. Because sometimes even a Jedi Master could use a do-over.
Ryan’s Rating
Looking at the book you can tell it is packed with tons of content and stuff to keep you busy for hours. It totally kick things off the right way by introducing kids to beginning sketches, then moves on to cover shading, outlining and coloring. By the end of the book it has you completely drawing characters from the TV series and in following their instructions it actually turns out really great. The only thing that I can see that might be a downer is that you really have to pay attention to the age recommendation on the book. When it says 8….it means 8. It may be hard to deter the littler ones at wanting this book and them not being able to catch on or complete the activities without grabbing the book and hurling it a another child that could.

Mickey’s Magical Christmas: Snowed In at the House of Mouse
There are so many titles you can get for the holiday’s. If you are going to at least add one more to your DVD collection it’s gotta be Mickey’s Magical Christmas: Snowed In at the House of Mouse. The cool thing about this one is that you have an overall new story weaved in and out of classic ones. It has four unforgettable holiday tales, including “The Nutcracker,” “Mickey’s Christmas Carol,” “Donald On Ice” and “Pluto And The Christmas Tree,” plus an epic finale of “The Best Christmas Of All”. Another sweet thing about this is that it has tons of Disney characters in it, new and old. From Belle to Simba…..this movie has sort of a “characterpalooza”!
About
Celebrate the season with Disney’s most popular holiday movie ever! Starring Mickey Mouse and 35 of the world’s most beloved characters, this one-of-a-kind adventure joyously captures the spirit of Christmas and is sure to delight the entire family. When a huge snowstorm leaves everyone stranded, Mickey and all of his guests at The House Of Mouse, including Pooh, Belle, Snow White, Cinderella, Ariel and many more of his old and new friends, break out the cookies and hot chocolate to help Donald mend his tattered Christmas spirit. The fun starts when Minnie pulls out their favorite holiday home movies and everyone starts to reminisce. Their magical memories soon put everyone in the Christmas mood — even grumpy Donald, who ultimately becomes the star of the evening.
Bonus Materials
- Premiere Episode Of HOUSE OF MOUSE
- The Sounds Of Christmas — A Disney Sound Effects Featurette
- Holiday Sing-Along Songs “Deck The Halls”
Ryan’s Rating
This movie starts out great. All of your favorite characters and some of my favorite stories ever. However I could not get over some continuity issues. I know…I know…you are saying “c’mon Ryan, be nice”. It just bothered me so much to see “Beast” back again…didn’t he turn into a GQ prince? Also, why is Aladdin Flying around in his street rat clothes? I’m sorry I know it’s bad but even my 6 year old asked those questions…and she’s a die-hard Disney fan!

Lands’ End SnowSystem Jacket Review
So it’s that time of the year that I love. The season that warms my heart. No, not football season….Fall and Winter! I have been in the market for a new coat or jacket. I typically look for something that looks like its going to work well in any situation and last for a very long time. Just in the nick of time I was given the chance to try out Lands’ End SnowSystem Jacket. I know, I know, you are saying to me “Ryan….you live in Texas!” You are right and we do still have a winter here too, believe it or not! The thing is with the weather, you never know if it is going to go from 25 degrees at night and heat up to 50 degrees by afternoon. With this jacket you can actually wear it three ways. The outside shell of the jacket can be unzipped from the inside of the jacket and worn separately or together if you are going to be experiencing crazy cold weather. So in essence I have several options when thinking about my day and if I am going to be “covered” in the right weather situation.
Our SnowSystem™ Jacket wears three ways, to take on any weather. The outer shell and inside liner are designed to wear separately or zip together for maximum protection. The outer shell features our exclusive AquaCheck® laminate, to give you waterproof protection that’s breathable. It also comes with pit zips to vent off excess heat, a zip-out powder skirt to keep the snow out on those epic ski runs and an adjustable hood with welded visor. Along with all that, there are interior mesh sunglass, goggle and cell phone pockets along with a zip-close MP3 player pocket with cord port. The inner jacket/liner is made from DriOff™-treated polyester with our exclusive PolarThin™ insulation for warmth without bulk. Two zip-close hand pockets and an inner zippered security pocket finish it off. 100% nylon shell. 100% polyester lining. Machine wash. Imported.
More Info
- Waterproof, breathable outer shell with AquaCheck® laminate
- Zip-out inner jacket with PolarThin™ insulation and DriOff™ finish
- Outer jacket features zip-off, snap close powder skirt
- Wear each jacket separately or combine for high-tech, severe-weather protection
- TEMPERATURE RATING: -10° to 15° Fahrenheit. Use this as a comfort range for the type of climate you’ll be wearing this SnowSystem Jacket in while wearing a typical winter wardrobe.
Ryan’s Rating
Overall I really do like the jacket. I feel that I can be comfortable in varying degrees of weather by utilizing the varying ways to wear it. I also do appreciate the quality of the craftsmanship: good seams, durable materials, and durable hardware (zippers and buttons). The only bad thing that I would have to say about it is that some of the inner pockets aren’t very secure and seems like if you were to put something in there, be cautionary about it staying in one place. Saying that….there are plenty more pockets to keep your belongings safe and secure.

Giraffalaff Limbo and Scatterpillar Scramble Review and Giveaway (Closed)
So in today’s world kids are inundated by ads or commercials encouraging them to watch cartoon marathons, play a new addictive video game for 27 hours straight, or heck…..even join a virtual world! I am not against all of those, but I do try and make it a point to play REAL tangible games from time to time. Theres nothing like sitting down next to a real person and having a friendly competition with a friend or family member. I grew up playing board games and have such good memories playing them with my family.
It made “game night” even easier when Hasbro and MyBlogSpark sent me Giraffalaff Limbo and Scatterpillar Scramble. These two games had my kids cracking up. My oldest who is 6 wanted to make sure that she did everything in her power to show her little brothers that she was a professional gamer. My middle child thought that the moves of the Scatterpillar were funny yet annoying and wanted it to stay still so he could win. He also put all of those super-hero acrobatics to the test on Giraffalaff Limbo. My youngest thought that if he concentrated enough he could figure it all out and take all the glory for himself! They may all play differently, but the one thing I see in their little eyes is the same thing my parents and grandparent saw in my eyes when I was their age, complete immersion and love of these types of games.
More About the Games
- GIRAFFALAFF LIMBO is the crazy new game of “how low can you go?” Spin the dial to try one of the 6 limbo styles: classic limbo, crab walk, crawl, giraffe walk, bend forward or backward. The game’s built-in sound will play an encouraging song as preschoolers try not to bump into Giraffalaff. If he’s knocked over, he’ll roll on the floor in laughter. The player that passes under Giraffalaff at the lowest level wins.
- In SCATTERPILLAR SCRAMBLE kids will do their best to balance marbles in the hands of one very wiggly caterpillar. Kids will have fun dancing along to the music with Scatterpillar in this fast-paced marble game. The first player to securely place all 8 marbles in Scatterpillar’s hands wins. SCATTERPILLAR SCRAMBLE was named the 2009 Preschool Game of the Year by Creative Child Magazine.
