The Logitech Alert

A handful of weeks ago my wife was at home and needed to call the dog inside who had been taking care of his business. She walked outside and noticed that an unfamiliar truck was in our neighbor’s driveway across the street. There was a person at their house that should have not been there taking things from their garage. She immediately ran back inside and watched a bit longer wondering if she should call the police or if this was a person who was a friend that had permission. Needless to say our other neighbor (who happens to be a good watchdog) busted up in the driveway and confronted the thief. The chase ensued and the cops caught up with them both and the crook was caught and justice served.

The thing that bothered us the most about this is “what if that was my garage?” or “what if our garage was a stepping stone to the inside of the house?” Other questions arose like what if our neighbors weren’t paying attention and someone came and robbed our house blind and no one ever got the chance to stop them? Our concerns were totally bothering me but I just did not know what to do about the situation. We did not want to install a huge security system that required off-site monitoring, false alarms, and not to mention a huge price tag.

Fortunately for me Logitech contacted me a couple of days after the incident and filled me in on the Logitech Alert system. The Logitech Alert is a complete home video security system that you can set up yourself. It comes with software that provides motion alerts and a live view from an internet-connected computer, your smartphone or Google TV systems. Plus, you can set it to send instant emails or texts when your camera detects motion. There are two camera types for different environments that you may need to keep an eye on.

The weatherproof outdoor security camera is equipped with night vision, so you can stay alert around the clock. And with high-quality, wide-angle HD picture, you can make out details such as faces and license plates. The indoor camera is also equipped with HD picture. It’s easily placed on any flat surface with the included stand, or pointed out a window with the suction cup. Now, you probably are wondering what sort of thing controls all of this. Each Logitech Alert Master System comes with Logitech Alert Commander, a powerful desktop application for your PC that lets you configure your video security system, watch live video, store video on your PC and review recorded video.

In addition to all that, Commander provides all sorts of sweet features—a few even the people who charge you an arm and a leg don’t have. Here’s what else you can do:

  • Control and configure your video security system
  • Manage up to six cameras
  • View live and recorded video in HD resolution
  • Set up motion zones for individual cameras
  • Create and manage e-mail and mobile phone motion alerts
  • Perform Digital Pan, Tilt and zoom
  • Back up video stored on your cameras to your PC
  • Manage account and security settings
  • Receive desktop notification of important events

Here is a shot from the living room camera. As you can see, this camera covers all of our living room and the kitchen. It also covers all three doors that lead in and out of my house. If someone was to enter in through any of these areas while we were away for the day or during a vacation the Logitech alert would notify me immediately of movement in the form of an email. I do also like this because when I get homesick during a long day at work it is really nice to pull up the app on my iPhone and check out what the kiddos are doing.

Ryan’s Rating: 9 out of 10!!

Pros:   Perfect piece of mind while away from your home.

Cons:  You have to use several outlets and there are some wires showing
