Like it, Reveal it, Win it Giveaway

Excitement is awesome. Especially when sweet companies like Samsung get excited. That means that when they get excited, stuff gets given away. Samsung has recently launched a fun campaign on their Facebook page, called “Like it, Reveal it, Win it“. People will have multiple opportunities to win fun new Samsung products, like the latest Samsung Smart TV.  I have went over there and “liked it” and then it lets you play a little “pick the winning pixel” type game.  I am a Samsung man as it is and still hug my Samsung Touch of Color  46″ 1080p TV everyday.

In celebration of YOU and the totally rad game on their Facebook page we are giving away the new Shrek 2 on Blu-ray as a giveaway to the best blog readers in the multiverse!

Good TV Can Come in Small Packages?

Things are really tight these days. I still get paid the same but it seems like everything else is going up. We have cut back a little bit here and there. The fans are on more and the a/c is turned up to a higher degree. We started eating out less and eating more food that is prepared at home. In the tech/geek department there have been no new video game purchases lately and we went down to streaming only on Netflix just to save a couple of bucks on getting a disc in the mail.

The next big decision we have to make is what to do about the way we watch TV and who brings us the channels that we watch so much. We thought about just totally going with something like Hulu from the Xbox, a Roku Box, or AppleTV. Sometimes though we like to tune in to channels that you can’t normally watch on those devices. We currently are spending waaaayyyy too much for DIRECTV as our bill is a little over $80! That is just like the basic 200 channels and no movie or sports packages. When shopping around and comparing dish packages I found out that I can cut that price in half and get even more than I was getting before.

We have been wronged in the past by our current satellite provider and hope that Crystal will give me the “OK” to rip them a new one and move on over to something like Infinity Dish where I could get a whole lot more for a whole lot less. Hopefully a decade down the road the situation will be totally different with a whole new way of getting the media we love. Remember…not too long ago a ton of people still had “rabbit ears”.

Let me know what is working for you and your household!

The Wild Thornberrys Review

The Wild Thornberrys have arrived on DVD.. My kids watched a lot of cartoons and still do. Not everyone was good enough that I would want to watch but the The Wild Thornberrys was one I did like to watch. Shout! Factory have been given the rights to distribute DVD and Blu-ray releases of some of Nick’s classic animated programs in the U.S. and Canada. The Wild Thornberrys are the first series to be released. They will soon be followed by Hey Arnold, Danny Phantom, Aaaah! Real Monsters, The Angry Beavers and one of my favorites, Rocko’s Modern Life.

My two older kids remember this series fondly and couldn’t wait to watch it. My two younger ones didn’t know what it was and was excited to see what it this all about. They watched the first of 4 discs and said they liked it and said they would keep watching it. I will watch it too with them. Tim Curry as Sir. Nigel Archibald Thornberry is awesome. Perfect casting as the bumbling naive documentarian who is a nature expert. He is always available for a laugh in this classic cartoon. Another one of my favorite characters was Darwin the talking monkey. He was a talking monkey only to Elizabeth “Eliza” Thornberry. She had gained the ability to speak to animals early on in the series. This ablitiy is the driving force behind the whole series as she and Darwin get in and out of wacky adventures.

The DVDs themselves are nothing to crow about. I was surprised to how plain they were by offering only the episodes themselves and nothing extra. With all star voices such as Tim Curry, Flea and Lacey Chabert. I would expect featurettes detailing the behind the scences making and development of this series. The creators of The Wild Thornberrys, Arlene Klasky Gabor Csupo have made so many great cartoons for Nickoledeon. There has to be tons of great creative background stories and insights to be shared. I am very sad they did not put any of this on the 4 disc box set.

Watching The Wild Thornberrys is a joy despite the obvious low production value. The colors are very dull, the transfer to DVD looks sub-par and it’s in standard, not letterbox. That is hard to get used to but you do. It’s just like the orginal series jumped into a time machine and landed in your TV. But what I loved about The Wild Thornberrys was not the artistry but the stories. Every episode delivers the humor, adventure and education I expected each week. If you have young ones who never saw this series you should treat them to this collection of quality storytelling.

World’s Greatest TV Dad

Growing up when I was young meant that I had a good bit of different influences when it came to “father figures”. My parents drove through splitsville when I was barely able to walk. I got to spend every other weekend with my dad to where he tried to do his best to cram as much fatherly stuff in as he could. My mom remarried and then I had a step-dad that molded me week to week in the way he thought was best. In addition to two powerhouses of daditude taking turns showing me the path to become a man I also had my grandfather who I saw during the week everyday after school. Three dudes in my life that all had different views on family, faith, values, politics, movie choices, and even soda choices.

I feel like even though I had several different influences on what guided me down the path to becoming a man and eventually a father were all instilled by one common factor…love. My dad showed me love for all of the time he had to spend separated from me. His excitment over having two full weeks in between visits made our time more meaningful and filled with pure adoration. My step-dad showed me love for providing a home for which I felt like I belonged to even when they added to the family in the form of a sibling. In a situation where I wasn’t his child he sure did treat me like one of his own. My grandfather filled in the gap between the others and understood me and knew how to make me smile. He gave me the love of not only the grandfather he was to me but as a seasoned father to my mother that included all of that experience.

There were sometimes that I had away from all of them and most of the time it was filled with TV. Man, there were so many dads on TV that taught me a couple of values in all of those 22 minute episodes. Now if I had to weigh in about who had the most influence on me in the TV realm besides Optimus Prime(?!?) I would have to go with a tie between Jason Seaver and Cliff Huxtable. Both dads had great heart to hearts and had a real sense of “dad” to me. Thanks to Man of the House for helping me come to this conclusion. Now you too can weigh in on the World’s Greatest TV Dad and who you think should reign supreme.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Dad Central Consulting on behalf of P&G and received promotional items to thank me for taking the time to participate.

The Muppets Sneak Peek

Who doesn’t like the Muppets? Here is a little bit of info coming up on the new movie coming up this fall.

On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams) from Smalltown, USA, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets’ former stomping grounds. To stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theater, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie now performs with a Reno casino tribute band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate. With secret, signature, celebrity cameos, “The Muppets” hits the big screen Nov. 23, 2011.
