Comic Reading Today

I have always loved reading. Not really diving into several thousand page novels but sitting down and reading short stories, comic strips in newspapers, or one of my favorite…comic books. I used to be an avid collector of the things. Not really a collector to buy and resale for outlandish prices but more of a collector to save and revisit later on for the stories that I really liked and enjoyed. I have started to introduce comics to my kiddos as a way to get them to be more interested in reading. Taylor has recently gotten a kick out of reading some of the Captain Underpants books that are pretty much a longer story set in comic form. Rylan has to have some time devoted to hearing one of us read a story aloud to him as a part to his Kindergarten homework everyday.  As for Peyton, he is going to have to start reading one day.

My comic collection has dwindled down to only four long boxes filled with books. That still is a fairly good amount of books putting my collection at around 850 books. They do still take up some space but two are in the attic and the other two are in the back of my closet. It is a pain to have to go a pull a box out and then search through a couple hundred just to get out one or two books to read daily. Thank goodness for the digital age and gadgets that take advantage of it. These days what I have been doing is taking a digital copy of a comic book and then throw them onto the iPad. It makes it a whole heckuva lot easier to just move individual issues to it or even combine pdf files to have a larger story or even a complete run of a series.

I also like that I can go and scan some of the old issues that are a bit brittle and not for little hands and then put those on my computer. After that I just move them into a pdf converter and viola! It just really feels cool that the very same comics that I grew up reading and enjoying are now here for my kids.  I do like to keep the fun in comic reading though as every once in awhile I still go by the comic shop and bring some copies home for them or even letting them pick out a book off of the rack at Toy’s R’ Us since they do actually still carry copies these days.  I do, however, still find them torn up all over the floor in their room the next day!

Hacker Would Make Me a Slacker

One of my online friends Dave, from the Jen and Dave show, lost his entire site to the plague of the Hackers about a month ago. I found this out because when I went to download his latest show it gave me an error message in iTunes saying that it was available and then it never updated. As I sit in front of my computer I am almost scared to death when a sound blurps (that words is blurted and chirps mixed together) and my antivirus is saying that a Trojan had been found in a certain file. I was alarmed when I saw that the file it was coming from was the Jen and Dave show file. So, Dave had been taken over completely by some deranged individual that probably loves being on the Javascript blacklist and has aspirations of being one of America’s Most Wanted.

So Dave had to completely destroy everything that he had on his sites after this attack. He deleted it all! Now his sites are back up and more protected than ever with some serious code hardening and probably a 47 character password to his dashboard! I have to say that I do not think that I would have even had the strength or know how to put it all back together and bring my site back from the edge of death. So, if you are are a hacker please don’t ever attack me because I would not know what to do and my kids would probably start crying….loud…without ceasing….very annoying.

Logitech Keyboard Showdown

When I got my iPad a couple of months back I immediately thought of all the accessories that I wanted to start looking at to pimp it out. I had actually been going back and forth wondering if I really could use an iPad or if it would just sit there and be used only for occasional games. Are they too big and delicate to even be in this house with all of these kids running around? I needed something to protect it but I also wanted to maybe just take it along with me when I travel instead of lugging around a standard laptop.

I knew that I did not like typing out long emails and blog posts with the onscreen keyboard. I make enough mistakes on a regular keyboard and I make even more with the onscreen virtual keyboard. I think I should just stick with what I make the least mistakes with and keep the auto correcting of my blundering fingers to a minimum. So, I sought out some solutions in the form of my friends over at Logitech and their selection of Bluetooth keyboards to suit my bumbling typing needs. I tried out two products with my iPad2 and those products were the Logitech Tablet Keyboard For iPad and the Logitech Keyboard Case for iPad 2.

You can find both of these items over at Logitech’s site. The Keyboard Case for iPad 2 retails for around $99.99 and the Tablet Keyboard For iPad retails for around $69.99. Also keep up with Logitech on Facebook and Twitter to see what other sweet products might be coming your way.

No Couch Potato’s Here

For a good bit now we have all been moving towards leading a healthy lifestyle at our house.  I had been a little overweight for the majority of my life and continued to over eat on a daily basis.  I noticed that my bad habits in my eating rituals had started to rub off on my children’s food choices.  We started to see them getting a little bit pudgier than they had been before and I knew that we all had to make a change.

We started eating a whole heckuva lot better.  We cut out quick solutions to meals and really started watching what we ate and what ingredients went into our meals.  We stopped snacking just because we were bored or just liked the thought of eating something and when we did notice that we wanted a snack we chose wisely.

We have been a good bit more active not only around the house but we have getting outside more.  We live in Texas and right now an immense drought is going on and really makes time outside in the heat really unbearable.  So, we head outside and go fast and furious in running, playing catch with various round things, and even doing some free weights.  We even get our dog involved and just get outside and run around like crazy to get our heart pumping.

As autumn is slowly creeping up on us we are hoping that the kids will take an interest in maybe some sort of organized team sports.  Taylor used to play soccer but didn’t care for it much.  Hopefully maybe they can all latch on to something like baseball or softball that way they can all have a sport in common and play at home as well.  I think that this will teach them something that they desperately need….how to work as a team towards a common goal.  My children can never work together at home.  Maybe this will be a way for them to see it in action and then hopefully incorporate it into their home life.

Answer the question “What life lessons do kids learn from playing team sports?” for a chance to win a $500 gift certificate for sporting equipment for your child’s team.

Want to help more children stay active by playing team sports? Go to SUBWAY® Baseball DeSIGNS Auction onEbay. All proceeds go to the Little League Urban Initiative, which helps fund inner-city youth leagues and teams.

The Fox and the Hound Review

From the vault comes a Disney classic that is sure to appeal to every member of your household, it’s The Fox and the Hound. This 1981 movie brings together a stellar voice cast that includes Mickey Rooney, Kurt Russell, and Corey Feldman. The 2006 sequel has the voice talent of Patrick Swayze, Reba McEntire, Lucas Grabeel, and Trisha Yearwood. The Fox and the Hound Bluray and DVD combo pack was released on August 9th, 2011 and is available at most retailers we drag our kids to and online.

Seriously, you need to check this movie out with your kiddos. I think that it shows no matter where you grew up, no matter what your story is, no matter what hardships you went through we always have a choice in our own lives in the friends we make and the bonds we share. We have a choice to always have that childish wonder about us and to never have to worry about what a person looks like, their financial status, or even their race. The Fox and the Hound shows that friendship and the love and care that go into it is a very powerful thing that can stand the test of time.

I sure hope you guys enjoy this movie with your family as much as we have. From my teary youth to my kids trying not to cry in front of each other on the couch this movie has been an awesome addition to our collection!

Havaianas: The Fabulous Fashionable Flip Flop

I’ll just start out by saying this. I cannot stand cruddy sandals or flip flops. How many of us have had a blowout while just walking around not doing much of nothing. Not to mention the times where we have been somewhere doing something important or in a place where we can’t just easily get something else to throw on our foot. I took a vow not too long ago to never wear a cheap pair of cruddy sandals or flip flops ever again. This goes for all of the big people flip flops and kids flip flops that will be flipped or flopped in my house. Then begs the question…what DO I wear now?

While searching for high quality flip flops or sandals I ran into a brand that I wasn’t too familiar with. I soon found out that most flip flops out there today in the market are just trying to be cheap imitations of these bad boys…Havaianas. Havaianas are the real deal. Started in 1962, Havaianas were inspired by the Zori, typical Japanese sandals made of fabric straps and rice straw soles. It is this reason that the foot-bed of all Havaianas have a textured rice pattern, one of it’s many unmistakable features that other’s try to duplicate.

I have found so many pairs of mens sandals and flip flops in styles that are so gnarly that I may spend all of my allowance on Havaianas flip-flops. One thing that really caught my eye is that you can even customize and make your own pair that are truly unique to you and your inner flip flopishness. Havaianas even has a bridal collection that is sure to delight the bride-to-be. All in all I think that Havaianas have so many sweet pairs of flip flops that I don’t think anyone would say one thing if you wore any pairs of these to The White House.
